The Barine, his head in his hands, listened. He would drink some more and softly sigh, “I’m bored,” staring out into the distance, as if sharing a secret, a plea, like the vagabonds of the port who also found no words to describe their sorrow. Then he would cry, and his tears would fall into his glass and be lost in the bubbles of the champagne.

Both of them would say, “Little poet … a child prodigy, a marvel …”

At other times, above his head, their eyes would meet, hazy with sudden desire; then, without a word, their lips would join for a long time. They kissed each other that way in front of Ishmael, without shame or fear, as if in the presence of the ivory Eros, dusted with gold, they had in their bedroom. And they did not see that the child grew thinner and paler with each passing day. They did not notice his drawn features, the dark rings under his sunken, burning eyes, his hot hands with their heavy fingers: he seemed to breathe in their passionate love as if it were a poisonous flower.
